(Night. Camera zooms from between buildings to cut to Lindsay, in the conference room, talking on the phone to Helen.)

Lindsay: I'm leaving any second.
Helen's voice: When?
Lindsay: As soon as Bobby gets here. Would it be so terrible if you had to blind date without us?
Helen's voice: Yes!
Lindsay: All right! He should have been here a half-hour ago... (Camera cuts away and we see a dark-clothed person wearing a cross coming through the door to the office) Wait, I think he's here now... (Yells into office.) Bobby?
Helen's voice: Hurry up!
Lindsay: Goodbye... (Begins to walk out of conference room and into the office) Bobby, you're late. Helen's mad at me now because- (she stops short as she sees no one in the darkened office. She heads towards Bobby's office) Bobby? (she peeks into the small room and sees no one. She turns back around and drops the folder she's holding onto a nearby desk, looking down at it, hands on her hips. A crash from nearby makes her jump, and she's starting to look scared)
Lindsay: (uncertainly) Bobby...funny... (she walks over to another desk, where the crash sounded like it came from, and sighs) It's not funny... (she turns back around and begins to walk away. The camera does a close up on her face, and we see a person with some kind of dark mask on behind her. She seems to sense the person, and rolls her eyes, thinking it's Bobby. She turns around, sees the person and gasps. We see the person swing a knife up towards her. She cries out as she's stabbed three times. On the third strike she falls to the floor. We see the assailant step over her and hear them walk quickly out of the office, shutting the door behind them. Lindsay lies on the floor gasping for breath, her hands bloody, before she seems to give up and lies still.)

Opening Credits

(We hear the phone ringing. The machine immediately picks up and, as we hear Lucy's voice on the tape, we see Lindsay, gasping, raise herself up on her elbows and start to crawl over to the desk where the phone is. The machine beeps and Helen's voice comes on)

Helen's voice: Where the hell are you guys? This guy's in the living room, he's drunk on guacamole, he's as funny as a harsh tack. (Lindsay pushes a chair aside and tries desperately to pull herself up on the desk to reach the phone) I'm dying here, guys. Dying... [oh, the irony!] (Lindsay grabs for the phone, but her hands are slippery from the blood and she begins to choke, so she slumps to the floor before she can get it. We see Bobby come through the door.)
Bobby: Lindsay, you here? (He sees Lindsay lying on the floor gasping for breath, her entire upper body covered with blood) Oh my god... (He stops short, looking shocked, then springs into motion, knocking things off the desk in his haste to get to her) Oh my god! Lindsay! (He throws himself down next to her and raises her head up. She struggles to breathe and she opens her eyes and looks blankly at him) Lindsay...
Lindsay: (weakly) Nun... (he looks at her, confused, and she gasps some more and passes out)

(We see the stretcher with Lindsay on it being wheeled into an emergency room, Bobby running alongside it. Her shirt is off, and you can see the gaping wounds with bandages over them, she's been intubated and someone is squeezing a bag to make her breathe)

Paramedic: BP's 160 palp, pulse 130, weak.
ER attending: Neck veins are distended, get her into trauma 2.
Bobby: (sounding desperate) Hold on, Lindsay... hold on! (She is wheeled into a trauma unit, various doctors and nurses work on her and Bobby watches in the background)
Doctor: Paddles ready...call the OR, tell them to get a chest tray...
Nurse: Clear! 1..2..3.. (Lindsay's body jerks as she is defibrillated, the nurse pauses and looks at a machine) Got a pulse, normal sinus rhythm...
Doctor: (shakes head) Muffled heart sounds, get me a syringe... (close-up on a bloody piece of skin with a syringe being injected. We see Bobby craning his neck to see and holding his hands as if in prayer, then back to the syringe, which is drawing blood out. The music in this scene is the same as the music from the teaser for the finale in the previous week's episode, everything is very chaotic)
Doctor: Get ready to crack the chest...
Another doctor: Scalpel... (a nurse pulls Lindsay's arm up so that is rests next to her head and a blue sheet is pulled over her chest. We see Bobby desperately trying to look. A nurse shoos him out of the room)

(Close-up on the hospital entrance, we see it is Saint Anne's Hospital. We then see Bobby sitting in the waiting room, rubbing his hands and looking red-eyed. Then we then see Helen come around a corner, look around, see Bobby, and make her way over quickly)

Helen: (as she's walking, almost desperately) Where?
Bobby: (stands up and shrugs his shoulders. We now can see the tears in his eyes and we hear them in his voice) Still in surgery.
Helen: Is she... (Bobby shakes his head and she hugs him in relief, beginning to cry. He hugs her back gently)
Bobby: I don't know anything yet.
Helen: (Her eyes are filled with tears) What happened?
Bobby: She said 'nun'. (Helen pulls back from the hug and looks at him questioningly)
Helen: Nun?
Bobby: She- she just looked at me, and she said 'nun'... (his voice breaks on the last word. At that moment, the doctor walks over to them. Bobby and Helen watch her come with looks of dread)
Doctor: (quietly) The...aorta was punctured. We think we've repaired it, but in the next 24 hours...we'll know.
Bobby: Know what?
Doctor: She went through a lot of punishment...it's amazing she even made it here. (Helen begins to sob)
Bobby: (runs his hands over his eyes) Where is she?
Doctor: She's in ICU.
Bobby: Can I see her? (Doctor looks as if she's about to say no, then sighs and relents)
Doctor: Okay. (she nods to Helen and leads them away)

(In ICU, the doctor pulls away a curtain and we see Lindsay lying on a bed, hooked up to about a zillion machines, including a respirator. Bobby looks horrified and extremely worried, and Helen puts a hand to her mouth. They walk over.)

Bobby: Can- can she hear me?
Doctor: It's possible, but I want her to stay calm. You can tell her you're here.
Bobby: (nods and looks down at Lindsay) Lindsay...it's me, Bobby. Helen's with me too... (sighs) You just hold on. You're going to be fine. Just hold on...
Helen: (tear filled) We'll be right here when you wake up... (she takes hold of Lindsay's hand, which lies still)
Bobby: We'll be right here.

(Office, it's daytime. Close-up on a mop cleaning up a large pool of blood and the trail to the phone. The camera pans up and we see Eugene behind the police tape, looking sad. He walks over to a desk, where Ellenor, Rebecca, and Jimmy sit and look on. Rebecca motions to the blood.)

Rebecca: This isn't evidence?
Eugene: (shrugging his shoulders) They got all they needed.
Lucy: (sitting at her desk) Eugene... Bobby's got an arraignment this morning on Watson... the car jack murder.
Eugene: (walks over to her) I'll take it.
Lucy: I'll get the file. (The door opens and we see Bobby enter, looking quite dishevelled. His tie is undone, there's a shadow on his face, and he looks very red-eyed and tired. He walks around Lucy's desk to his office while everyone looks at him. Once he's in his office, Eugene follows him, but Bobby comes back out and stumbles.)
Bobby: Excuse me.
Eugene: (stepping aside) Sorry. (Bobby walks back over to Lucy's desk and begins to look through papers. Everyone looks at Ellenor, and she sighs.)
Ellenor: No change, Bobby?
Bobby: (pauses, then with a gravelly voice) No. (everyone looks quite sad and shocked at what has happened. Bobby talks to Lucy) You got the Watson file? (Lucy looks at Eugene)
Eugene: Bobby, I thought I'd take it.
Bobby: I can do it.
Eugene: Yeah, but do you think under the circumstances-
Bobby: I'm fine. I can do it. (Eugene sighs and looks down)

--- [Note: One of the things I love most about this episode is Lara Flynn Boyle's amazing acting. In each scene, Helen comes across as this angry avenging angel who'll take no prisoners in her quest to find Lindsay's attacker, but then, as soon as she's with her injured friend, she softens up and is gentle, almost motherly. It's very well done.]
(Helen's office. We see Helen and a police detective come through the door, Helen a flurry of motion as she walks over to her desk.)

Helen: Every nun that works in that church, get them all in here.
Mike: Helen...
Helen: She said 'nun'!
Mike: Look, we don't know-
Helen: Lindsay freed the nun killer, now she gets stabbed by a nun. I'm gonna play a hunch and say it was someone who works in that church. Get every one of them in here for questioning.
Mike: We can question them there.
Helen: I want them here; I want it in our control, I want them sequestered from each other. Mike: If we bring them here it's custodial. Do you want to be reading Miranda to fifty nuns?
Helen: (leans on her desk and looks up at him) Yes. Go get them.

(Courtroom. We see Judge Hiller.)

Baliff: 32623, Commonwealth versus Joseph Watson, murder in the second degree.
Bobby: (rises) Bobby Donnell for the defendant, your honor, waive reading.
D.A.: Curtis Simmons for the commonwealth, your honor, we'd be opposing bail.
Bobby: My client isn't a flight risk, your honor.
Simmons: Safety risk.
Bobby: This is the first time he's ever shot anybody. (Judge Hiller looks at him, shocked at such a slip-up. Bobby catches himself) Allegedly.
Hiller: I'm denying bail.
Bobby: Defense asks for a probable cause hearing.
Hiller: This afternoon, two o'clock?
Simmons: (shrugs) Fine.
Hiller: I'll see Mr. Donnell in chambers. (Bobby sighs)

(The door opens to Hiller's office. She moves aside and lets Bobby through)

Hiller: (gently) How's she doing?
Bobby: (sighs) She's still in critical condition.
Hiller: (walking over to her desk) And you?
Bobby: (pauses and looks down) I'm fine.
Hiller: Do you think that we could get someone in your firm to handle this case?
Bobby: I'm fine, it's- (he sighs) It's a good distraction.
Hiller: Yes, and you look distracted! Do you know what you just said in there? This is the first time he's ever shot somebody? (she shakes her head) That's not good defending talk. Why not take a few days?
Bobby: (raising his voice) And do what? Just sit next her bed?
Hiller: Well, yes!
Bobby: (looks down. We can see the tears forming. His voice becomes hoarse) I can't do anything for her there! It- (he looks down again, then raises his head again, in control.) I'm fine, your honor.
Hiller: (seeing not to push him anymore) Okay. (Bobby takes his briefcase and leaves. Hiller looks after him, her face worried.)

(Hospital. We see Bobby walk over to Lindsay's bedside and sit down opposite Lucy, who is holding Lindsay's hand.)

Lucy: Hey.
Bobby: Hi. (He takes Lindsay's hand and whispers) Hey, Lindsay... it's me. The doctors say you're- you're doing good. (pause) Lucy's here... (to Lucy) You- you been talking to her?
Lucy: Well, I've been afraid to, since everyone says I'm annoying. (Bobby smiles and laughs gently at this)
Bobby: Ellenor's coming in after lunch...
Lucy: Her parents just left.
Bobby: (begins to cry, holding her hand up to his cheek) We all love you... (Huge pause as he cradles her hand and kisses it) ...I love you. You just keep- keep getting better... (Lucy looks on sadly. We see a priest come over, standing in the shadows. Lucy opens her mouth and looks at him. Bobby sees her and looks around. Upon seeing the priest, he becomes angry and stands.)
Bobby: She's not dying, get out! (The priest moves towards him) Get out, she's not dying!
Priest: Bobby, Bobby, it's me! Patrick! (As he steps into the light, Bobby recognizes him to be Patrick, his priest and friend.)
Bobby: (sighs in relief) I'm sorry. I thought... I thought you-
Patrick: (waves his hand as if to say it doesn't matter) I know, it's okay. (pauses and looks at Bobby) Are you okay?
Bobby: (whispering) Yeah. Yeah. (Patrick does the sign of the cross and Bobby sits back down. They begin to pray)
Bobby & Patrick: Hail Mary, full of grace, the lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women...blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for our sinners now and in the hour of their death. (Lucy bows her head)
Patrick: Amen.
Bobby: Amen. (chokes back tears as he does the sign of the cross)

COMMERCIAL 2

(Closeup of TV newscast)

Man: Evidently the police are on a huge nun roundup. (We see Jimmy, Rebecca, Ellenor, Eugene, and Lucy sitting around the conference table watching) You'll remember Lindsay Dole was the attorney who secured the freedom of Michael Kingston, the man accused of murdering and mutilating Sister Caroline Oaks. Miss Dole has apparently identified a nun as her attacker, and the police think the two cases may be connected. (Rebecca clicks off the machine)
Jimmy: How did this nun know Lindsay would be working late?
Lucy: (raising her voice) I didn't tell!
Jimmy: I'm not accusing you of telling... I'm asking a question. (Everyone sighs and rolls their eyes) Can't anyone ask a question around here without everyone getting all defensive? (Rebecca touches his arm to calm him, and he turns on her) Why's everything an attack?
Ellenor: Well, good to see you don't get defensive!
Jimmy: Hey, you know what, Ellenor-
Ellenor: No, you know what, I don't know!
Rebecca: All right, let's not be biting each other's heads off, please!
Jimmy: I'm not biting heads off! I ask a simple question, and Lucy gets all defensive-
Lucy: Well, you're accusing me of helping a stabbing nun!
Jimmy: (simultaneous with Lucy) And Ellenor backs it up!
Eugene: (yelling over the chaos) Come on! (everyone stops and glares at each other. The room fairly crackles with tension)

(Courtroom. We see a police officer on the stand.)

Officer: The suspect matched the description, we detained him.
Simmons: The defendant.
Officer: Yes. We found articles belonging to the victim in his pocket, so we places him under arrest, read him his rights, and brought him down to the precinct. (Time shifts and we see Bobby now questioning him.)
Bobby: Did he ever ask for his lawyer?
Officer: He shouted out something about how he was entitled to a phone call, to call his lawyer. We told him he could make that call when we got to the precinct.
Bobby: Did he make that call?
Officer: I believe he did, ah- he left a message on the lawyer's machine. (We see Simmons now crossing a new witness. If you watch Seinfeld, it's the same guy who played George's boss Kreuger.)
Simmons: Did you have occasion to question the defendant?
Smiley: Yes I did, during which interrogation he confessed to killing Jennifer Lyman, the owner of the vehicle. (We see Bobby now questioning)
Bobby: (sweeping his arms) He just confessed.
Smiley: That's correct.
Bobby: (Sarcastically) Did he hand you a cookie with this confession?
Simmons: Objection...
Hiller: Sustained.
Bobby: Did he ever ask for his lawyer during your interrogation?
Smiley: No, he did not.
Bobby: Did you know he had called his lawyer?
Smiley: No, I did not.
Bobby: You didn't know when you went into that room to interrogate him that he had made a call to his lawyer?
Smiley: I was told he was thinking about contacting his lawyer, that's all.
Bobby: So what did you say when you walked in there? Did you say anything with respect to his hiring a lawyer?
Smiley: I said he was free to bring in an attorney and that he, of course, was entitled to one, but that he also might want to think about talking to me without one.
Bobby: Why?
Smiley: Basically, I convinced him that with co-operation came my recommendation for leniency. We talked a little bit more on that, and then he decided to speak to me voluntarily, and it was, at that time, without an attorney present. Bobby: And this was in the course of this discussion that...
Smiley: He confessed to killing Ms. Lyman.
Bobby: Your Honor, it is at this time that the defense moves to suppress my client's statement... 6th amendment, right to counsel. (Simmons looks disgruntled. Hiller sighs and bangs the gavel.)
Hiller: All arguments tomorrow, two o'clock. (Bobby immediately grabs his briefcase and walks out of the room.)

(The door opens to an office, and we see Judge Kittleson enter with Jimmy. She begins to hang up her robe.)

Kittleson: The whole weekend? What about coming back a little early?
Jimmy: I just don't feel right being away right now...she's in critical condition.
Kittleson: (sighs) You're right. Is there anything I can do, Jimmy?
Jimmy: (walks over to the desk) Just pray, I guess... with the rest of us. (He sets his briefcase down on her desk and knocks some papers off the edge)
Kittleson: (smiles) It's all right.
Jimmy: (moves around the desk to pick up the papers) The doctors say we should know something soon, but... I don't know, you get nicked in the heart, you can't- (he stops short as he sees a picture among the fallen papers. It's a black-and-white photo of Bobby and Lindsay, taken on the street somewhere. They're walking together and laughing. Lindsay's face, however, is all scratched, as if scribbled over with a pen. Jimmy stares at it, shocked.)
Kittleson: (worried) Jimmy, what? Are you okay?
Jimmy: What? Oh, I was just... thinking about something the doctors said. (He scoops up the papers, tucking the photo beneath them)
Kittleson: (looking sideways at him) Are you all right?
Jimmy: Yeah, uh... this is all kind of stressful, you know... (Kittleson walks over to the door and locks it, then back over to Jimmy)
Kittleson: At the risk of seeming completely insensitive... My mother told me that the day my father's father died, he was so despondent that all she wanted to do was take his mind off it. (She puts her face close to Jimmy's) And, when all else fails... (we hear Jimmy's zipper go down)
Jimmy: (uncomfortable) I'm not in the mood for that right now.
Kittleson: (controlling) I am... (Jimmy looks at her, a little frightened)

(I'm not sure of this location, but it's a big room and it looks like it might be a part of the courthouse. The large room is noisy and filled with nuns. Helen walks around with a clipboard. We see Bobby enter and walk over to Helen.)

Bobby: Why are you doing this here?
Helen: I convinced them to do it all at once, and there's no room in the police station. (A defense attorney walks up to them)
Lawyer: If this isn't a major civil rights violation- (Helen rolls her eyes)
Helen: Oh, go kill yourself.
Bobby: Helen...
Helen: This isn't custodial counsel, any one of them is free to leave.
Lawyer: In which case you told them they'd become suspects.
Helen: Which just means more business for lawyers like you. You should be thanking me, you scum sucking-
(Bobby takes her by the arm and drags her away)
Bobby: Helen... (they are met by Detective Mike and a tall priest)
Mike: Helen... this is Father O'Brien from the archdieces.
Helen: Hello, did you come to rescue one of your nuns before I can throw her in prison?
Bobby: Helen! (he takes her arm again and they move on)
Helen: (in passing the archdiesis) You can go to hell.
Bobby: (as they're walking, we see Jimmy come in the door) Helen, that's the archdiesis!
Helen: I don't care. One of his nuns stabbed Lindsay. (Jimmy meets them)
Jimmy: Bobby! I need you a second... in private. (Bobby goes with Jimmy and Helen walks back to the detectives)

(Jimmy and Bobby enter a small, dimly lit office. Jimmy puts his briefcase down and begins pacing)

Jimmy: Remember the- (he stops, unsure of what to say) You told me you thought Judge Kittleson was a psycho. That's what you said, remember?
Bobby: Yeah. Why?
Jimmy: Do you really think she's crazy? I don't, but maybe I'm too close. It's hard to think straight when a woman's got your- (sighs)
Bobby: Jimmy, what's going on?
Jimmy: (he sighs, then comes closer to the desk) I'm sure this is nothing... (he leans down on the desk) But I found a picture in her office. It was of you and Lindsay... and Lindsay's face was all scratched out. (Bobby looks shocked and angry, and leans down on the desk, his voice excited and low)
Bobby: A picture... of me and Lindsay?
Jimmy: Taken on the street somewhere, like you were being stalked or something. I'm sure it's nothing, but...
(Bobby's face hardens)

(Helen's office. Detective Mike is talking to them)

Mike: I can't get warrant on that!
Bobby: She's crazy! She's obsessed with me!
Mike: You don't know that...
Bobby: I do know it!
Helen: Go to the magistrate at Middlesex... he gives out warrants like gum.
Mike: You're the lawyers here! We haven't got cause!
Bobby: I heard her tell me... she planned to kill Lindsay.
Mike: What?
Bobby: In chambers, she said it, there's your cause, go get the warrant!
Mike: (nodding) Nice try, Bobby. (Bobby looks disgruntled)
Helen: We have the boyfriend, Jimmy Berlutti, coming forward and implicating her. That's cause.
Mike: He didn't really implicate her.
Helen: Yes, he did! Right, Bobby?
Bobby: (slowly) Right.
Helen: Go get the warrant. (Mike looks at them open-mouthed, then leaves. Bobby looks at Helen, then picks up his beeper as it beeps. He looks at the number and looks frantic)

(Hospital. Bobby is walking quickly down the hallway towards the ICU. Eugene meets him halfway.)

Eugene: Bobby-
Bobby: What happened?
Eugene: Hold on a minute.
Bobby: (trying to get past) Let's go!
Eugene: Listen to me! She looks worse than she is. Something went wrong with her breathing, but- (he stops and looks frustrated as Bobby barges past him. Bobby enters the room to see Lindsay with a plastic facemask taped over her mouth and nose. She looks very pale, and there's a respirator hooked up to the mask. Ellenor is sitting there, as well as Rebecca and Patrick the priest.)
Bobby: Where's the doctor?
Ellenor: She's out in the hall somewhere, but I have the information-
Bobby: I want the doctor!
Rebecca: (getting up) Okay, okay. I'll get her. (she leaves with Eugene)
Ellenor: She went into respiratory distress. Basically her lungs crashed, but they're inflating now.
Bobby: Why isn't she waking up?
Ellenor: The doctor just said it was going to take some time...
Bobby: It's been twenty-four hours! Why isn't she waking up?
Ellenor: Why don't you just sit with her?
Bobby: I can't, I'm in court, and I gotta... uh, I- I'm in court!
Patrick: Ellenor, would you excuse us for a minute, I'd like to talk to him.
Bobby: Yeah, fill me in on the master plan behind this one.
Patrick: Ellenor... (Ellenor gets up and leaves. Bobby waits for her to exit, then turns to Patrick angrily.)
Bobby: Don't talk to me...
Patrick: I will talk to you. (pauses) You sat beside your mother and held her hand. It didn't work for her-
Bobby: I didn't ask you to come and help me through this.
Patrick: No, that's right, you go through everything alone!
Bobby: Why don't you go find someone who needs your help! (He sighs and looks away. Patrick looks down at Lindsay's still form, then back up at Bobby's tearful eyes.)
Patrick: You really love her, don't you. (Bobby looks at him, shaking his head.)
Bobby: Why would I ever tell you? (Patrick looks slightly offended) You'd just send it on up to God and he'd kill her. (Patrick looks intrigued)
Patrick: You believe God kills the people you love? That's your theory?
Bobby: That's my history. (Patrick looks mad)
Patrick: Fine. But she doesn't need a fat old priest holding her hand right now. She needs you! (He leaves, and Bobby looks at Lindsay sadly. Camera fades to-)

(- a line of cars driving down a residential street at night. The stop in the driveway of a large house and Helen gets out of one, slamming the door and walking quickly to the front door of the house, flanked by Mike and a police officer. They walk up to the porch and ring the doorbell. The grid metal peephole is opened, and a pair of eyes peek out before the door opens to reveal Judge Kittleson. She looks shocked)

Mike: Your Honor, we have a warrant to search your house.
Kittleson: What?
Helen: Check every closet, under every bed... (a few officers make their way into the house)
Kittleson: What in God's name is this!
Helen: Step aside, your honor.
Kittleson: What are you looking for?!
Mike: Evidence in connection with the attempted murder of Lindsay Dole.
Kittleson: What! On what basis do you get such a warrant?
Mike: Your honor, if you'll just co-operate, we'll do this quickly.
Kittleson: This is preposterous!
Helen: You honor-
Kittleson: I know she is your roommate, Miss Gamble, but that does not give you the right-
Officer: (from background) Detective... (he holds up a nun outfit. Kittleson rolls her eyes)
Kittleson: Oh, please! (Helen looks at her in a mixture of shock and disgust)
Helen: Read her her rights. (She walks out of the house)
Kittleson: You are making a big mistake! (She looks infuriated as handcuffs are placed on her and she is lead away)

COMMERCIAL 3

(Morning. We see a jail cell with Judge Kittleson sitting down in it, her head in her hands. Judge Hiller walks up.)

Hiller: Roberta.
Kittleson: (raises herself up to look at Hiller) I am innocent. (Hiller looks horrified.)
Hiller: I didn't ask! (She looks at Kittleson, who is relieved that her friend believes in her) What was with the nun suit?
Kittleson: It was a costume! I was going to wear it to some Halloween party, disguised as a prude... (She looks tearful) I- (she shakes her head. Hiller looks sad.)

(Helen and Mike are walking through the courthouse)

Helen: Nothing?
Mike: Nothing too relevant. A manuscript for a novel she started had some pretty kinky murders in it-
Helen: Stabbings?
Mike: Yeah, but... Helen, there was no physical evidence.
Helen: What about the nun outfit?
Mike: She says it was for a costume party.
Helen: She ever wear it to any party?
Mike: Not that we could confirm...
Helen: (stops and faces him) I think this woman's really crazy, Mike.
Mike: Maybe so, but I wouldn't go to an arraignment with what we have!
Helen: Keep looking. I'll push the arraignment to tomorrow.

(Morning at the hospital. Bobby is asleep in a chair next to Lindsay's bed. Eugene comes in and wakes him up.)

Eugene: Bobby... (He wakes up) You're due in court in a half-hour. I think I'll take it.
Bobby: I can do it. Eugene, I said I can do it. (he stands up groggily and picks up his coat. The doctor comes in and he turns on her.) Why isn't she waking up?
Doctor: Mr. Donnell...
Bobby: You said twenty-four hours! It's been way more than twenty-four hours, why isn't she waking up!
Doctor: Mr. Donnell! Sometimes... guests of this hospital need to be reminded that they're guests. (He glares at her and she glares right back. He's about to put on his tie when)
Lindsay: (so quietly you can hardly hear her) Bobby? (Everyone stops and looks down at her. She moves her mouth a little bit and swallows, and Bobby looks at Eugene, then sits next to her)
Bobby: Lindsay. Lindsay!
Lindsay: (pained, very quietly and weakly) Mmm... I hurt...
Bobby: Yeah, you... you had an accident, but you're going to be fine, you just had a accident, that's all... (Lindsay touches the tube in her nose)
Lindsay: I- I'm in the hospital... (The doctor moves her hand away from her face)
Bobby: Yeah. I'm right here... and Eugene's here too.
Lindsay: Oh... (She swallows and breathes hard, like it's hard for her to speak) I was stabbed, some... guy stabbed me...
Bobby: Yeah, but- (he looks down, then back up, his face confused) Guy? (He pauses) You- you said nun!
Lindsay: (swallows, then whispers.) It was... a guy in a nun... suit. (she opens her eyes for the first time and looks at Bobby)
Bobby: (looks at Eugene incredulously) Did you- did you see his face? (Lindsay shakes her head slightly)
Lindsay: No, but... I saw his hands... and he was so strong... he couldn't have been a woman...
Bobby: (strokes her hair) Sweetheart, are you sure? (Lindsay nods, then screws up her face in pain)
Lindsay: Yes... (she turns her head to one side and gasps) Ow...
Doctor: Don't try to move, just rest, okay? (she nods and turns back to Bobby, her eyes closed)
Bobby: That's right, you- you just rest. (She sighs and opens her eyes again. He touches her face, beside himself with happiness) I love you.
Lindsay: I love you too... (She closes her eyes again and gasps) Kingston...
Bobby: What?
Lindsay: (very breathily) The nun... killer... he said, he said I was virginal, and that, that, uh... after the case, he said see you soon... (Bobby begins to look angry) I think it was him... (She struggles for breath again and he holds her)

(Bobby meets Helen and Mike at the courthouse, followed by Eugene)

Bobby: Helen! (She walks over to him) He's got a barricaded door, you'll have to break it down.
Helen: We know, Mike's going to go get Lindsay's statement, it's the only way we can get a warrant. (Worriedly) Is she okay?
Bobby: I think so. The guy she put back out there, can you believe it?
Eugene: Come on, Bobby...
Bobby: Because of her, he walks, and she-
Helen: We'll get him! We'll get him, Bobby, don't worry. (Bobby sighs and walks away with Eugene)

(Kittleson's jail cell. She's asleep. A guard comes over and unlocks her cell.)

Guard: Okay, ma'am. You're free to go. (She stands up and shakes her shoulders, then walks out. She's walking down the hall when she sees Jimmy standing at the end of it. She walks up to him, tight-lipped, angry)
Jimmy: I'm so sorry. I saw the picture of Bobby and Lindsay with the face all scratched out, and my brain just started going sideways. (She looks at him a moment, then walks past him and away. He sighs sadly.)

(Courtroom)

Bobby: He asked for his lawyer.
Simmons: No, he said he wanted to call his lawyer. There's a difference.
Bobby: What difference?
Simmons: We have no evidence he wanted to engage the legal services-
Hiller: No, he was calling to find out the price of fresh fruit. Come on, Mr. Simmons! (We see Eugene laughing in the back of the courtroom)
Simmons: Even if the court wants to conclude that he asked for an attorney-
Hiller: The court does.
Simmons: He did not have an attorney. He was not represented by counsel; he had only left a message on a machine.
Bobby: As soon as he asks for his lawyer, all-
Simmons: This man was not interrogated!
Bobby: (sarcastically) Not interrogated?
Simmons: Detective Smily said it would be better to co-operate. He never denied him the right to a lawyer. He didn't push forward with questions! All he said was, it would be better for him to talk without a lawyer. And at that point, Mr. Watson agreed.
Bobby: It doesn't matter that he agreed!
Hiller: Why not are you suggesting that he's not free to change his mind?
Bobby: That's exactly what I'm suggesting! Once he asks for his lawyer-
Hiller: Your client is a career criminal. One could argue he knows how this works! You're saying he lacks the right to change his mind and waive counsel?
Bobby: Yes. Once a suspect asks for his lawyer-
Simmons: You sound like a broken record.
Bobby: The law is a broken record, don't you get that, you idiot?
Simmons: Hey!
Hiller: Bobby...
Bobby: The law says that once he says "I need a lawyer" or "I want a lawyer" or "I *think* I want a lawyer", that's it as far as the police goes. They don't even get to say, Hi, how's it going.
Hiller: Why, if he-
Bobby: Because we don't trust the police not to interrogate and we don't trust these suspects to know what the hell is going on... they're stupid! We don't give them the right to waive counsel because they're so stupid they would! They're scum with third grade educations! They kill people, and laugh, and the courts are here to protect them at all costs!
Hiller: Counsel!
Bobby: We don't care about the victims! They're dead already! (We see Eugene sigh like, here we go again) We come in here worrying about the constitution and the rights of these brain dead pieces of crap, because they're what the system is all about!
Hiller: All right, Bobby!
Bobby: Now you may not like that. But that's the way it works. We need to protect these asses! And his sixth amendment rights were violated here! So as a matter of federal law, we need to go put him back out there so he can go shoot somebody else! (He walks over to the defendant and picks him up by the collar, dragging him over to the judge) Which is what you're gonna do, right? You've gotta go out and kill somebody because you're running behind schedule! (Eugene stands up)
Eugene: Bobby!
Bobby: No! We need to protect the bill of rights! We need to protect the bill of rights! (He stands still for a moment, fuming and staring at Hiller.)
Hiller: (shocked, quietly) That's enough, Bobby. (He stands there a moment longer, then looks like he's going to burst into tears)

(Helen, Mike, and a bunch of SWAT guys with pistols are walking down a hallway towards Kingston's apartment. Helen has a bullet-proof vest on, and Mike stops her before they reach the door)

Mike: This is as far as you go.
Helen: Mike...
Mike: This guy's got a gun fetish, remember? (Helen sighs and backs up to the wall. The gunmen make a circle around the door, and Mike knocks from the side. The door opens a crack and we see the familiar face of Michael Kingston looking out.)
Mike: (sarcastically) Police. Can we come in? (Kingston slams the door. Mike nods to the officers, who raise a battering ram and break the door in just in time to see Kingston raise a gun and squeeze off a shot. An armored officer runs in and shoots him with a machine gun. Kingston jerks in the air as dozens of bullets hit him. We see Helen in the hall, jumping and covering her face as the shots go on. Finally they stop.) Officer: Clear! (Helen walks into the apartment. On the walls she sees photos and newspaper clippings of Lindsay everywhere, thousands of pictures. She looks horrified, then walks over to the dying Kingston and kneels)
Helen: Do you know why you're dying? (He gasps for breath) You stabbed the wrong girl. Can you hear me, Mike? Do you know why you're dying? (Detective Mike nudges her, looking towards the wall. Helen looks and sees a blond woman huddled, tied up, with a gag in her mouth, and moaning. She looks horrified)
Helen: My God. What, does he just collect 'em?

(Hospital. Lindsay's bed is slightly elevated, and she looks better, but she's still weak)

Lindsay: So he had another one? (We see Rebecca coming through the door with flowers)
Bobby: If you had waited another day to regain consciousness and ID him, she could be dead too. (Helen walks over)
Helen: Hey babe.
Lindsay: Hey.
Helen: You look great. (Lindsay scoffs and rolls her eyes at this)
Rebecca: (looking at the flowers) Hey, a tape came with these.
Lindsay: Who's it from?
Rebecca: It doesn't say.
Lindsay: Put it in, it's probably from my parents. (She looks at Helen) So it was Kingston.
Helen: Seems so, only the latest girl he kidnapped, it was the same night as your assault, and she doesn't think he ever left the apartment.
Lindsay: (looks shocked) So...maybe it wasn't him?!
Helen: Well, she can't be sure he didn't leave, and we think he must have. (She is interrupted by a whistle coming from the tv screen)
Joey Heric's voice: Hello. (they all look up in shock) Heard you were having some chest pains, Lindsay. (She looks shocked and moves her head up) Whenever I hear of someone getting stabbed, my head just goes to that poor Susan Robin girl. So young to be losing her head. (Helen looks horrified) Anyway, I just wanted to say... hope you're feeling better. (Lindsay looks like she wants to kill him, she's so mad) Kisses to Bobby. (Bobby looks utterly disgusted) And to Ellenor. Why doesn't she ever work late? (Ellenor looks, in Lucy's words, 'riled'. They all sit in shock for a moment)

COMMERCIAL 4

(Still in the hospital. Helen, Bobby, Eugene, and Ellenor are walking down a hallway, obviously to talk without worrying Lindsay.)

Helen: I'll bring him in for questioning.
Eugene: It isn't Joey Heric. He just can't resist a game; that's all it was about.
Helen: I don't like him knowing about Susan Robin... what is that about?
Eugene: Everyone knows about Susan Robin. It was front page news!
Bobby: What's your theory, Helen, that Joey Heric killed Susan Robin?
Helen: He's always had some sort of special hatred towards Ellenor; Ellenor dated George Vogelman; maybe it was about framing George!
Eugene: That's a bit of a chess game, isn't it?
Helen: And who's the sickest chess player we know?
Ellenor: Well, if he has this special hatred towards me, then why did he stab Lindsay!
Helen: I don't know! Like any of this is supposed to make sense. We're dealing with a psychotic here!
Eugene: So what are you going to do now, get another warrant and knock down Joey Heric's door?
Helen: (glares at him) Shut up, Eugene. (she looks at everyone else, biting her lip) What if Michael Kingston didn't do this... we just assassinated the guy.
Ellenor: Oh yeah, an innocent man... all he did was kill a nun!
Helen: (sighs and shakes her head) I'm bringing Joey in, I suggest you find George. If Joey did frame George, then maybe he saw him that night. (Just then Bobby's beeper goes off, and he looks at it)
Bobby: Hiller's back with her ruling. (He leaves)

(Office. Ellenor and George Vogelman are talking.)

George: What?!
Ellenor: (sighing) It's just a theory.
George: Why would he want to frame me?
Ellenor: I don't know. Maybe he thought you would come running to us... maybe he thought you and I were still dating, I- I don't know.
George: That doesn't make sense...
Ellenor: Look, George, some murderers want to be caught by specific people. And Joey Heric, he is this...narcissistic, sick... (She sighs) Look, I...don't think he's really the one who stabbed Lindsay. And I don't think he's the one who killed Susan Robin, but stranger things have happened! And God knows he loves seeing us spin, which we're certainly doing now! (She turns away and grabs a picture off of her desk.) Here's his picture. Did you see *anyone* that night who looks like him? (George looks at it, his brow furrowed.
George: Well, his face looks familiar, but... it's probably from seeing him in the news when you guys were defending him.
Ellenor: George. You have got to think back to the night that Susan Robin was murdered. You didn't see anyone like him? (George looks back down at the photo and shakes his head.)
George: I don't think I did, Ellenor. (Ellenor sighs)

(Courtroom. People are sitting down in their seats.)

Hiller: It seems silly... a suspect can't change his mind. Here, the defendant was given his rights. He wasn't coerced or beaten...he decides to co-operate. But the law says, too bad; once he asks for his lawyer, the police can't even ask him what he wants for dinner. And, without a confession, this man walks...because they've got nothing else. (she sighs and sits back in her chair) A month ago, I was faced with putting a nun killer back on the streets because of a bad search. Though I recognized the absurdity of the application of the fourth amendment in that case... I was the good judge. I followed the law. And I set the man free. And *two nights* ago... the lawyer who championed both him and the fourth amendment... (She sighs) It seems... he stabbed her. (Bobby looks upset, and he shakes his head.) The way we keep putting them back out there... (She shakes her head) It takes a brave judge to look beyond the horror at hand and cling to the principles of our constitution... principles we proudly live by... in this room. (she looks away, pauses for a moment, then raises her head again) Well, I- I'm afraid I'm not that brave any longer. (She looks at the defendant.) If you see the streets again, Mr. Watson, it'll be through the appeals court; you won't get there by my gavel. The motion to suppress is denied. The defendant will stand trial. Adjourned. (Bobby looks mad, but also a little relieved.)

(Bobby and Eugene are leaving the courtroom. They go out in the hall and are walking when Detective Mike walks up to them.)

Mike: We just found the murder weapon. (Bobby stops)
Bobby: What?!
Mike: In a dumpster behind Kingston's apartment building.
Bobby: And Joey Heric?
Mike: Says he was on a date, we're trying to verify. (He looks at Eugene, then back at Bobby.) I think Eugene's right, he was just having some fun with you. (He turns to leave.) I've got to find Helen. (he leaves. Bobby and Eugene stand for a moment in thought.)
Eugene: Kingston.
Bobby: Unless Joey planted the knife. (Eugene shakes his head and sighs) I never rule him out, Eugene. (Eugene looks at him straight on.)
Eugene: It wasn't Joey Heric! (He pushes past Bobby)

(Kittleson's office. She and Hiller are sitting and talking.)

Hiller: I might as well go home and burn my robe. (Kittleson shakes her head.)
Kittleson: You were completely within your discretion. Listen, these laws don't get revisited higher up unless some superior court judge forces the issue. (Hiller thinks about this, then changes her expression.)
Hiller: How are you doing?
Kittleson: (sighs and laughs a little bit) I'm fine.
Hiller: You were booked on a homicide, Roberta. Don't tell me you're fine. (There's a knock at the door and it opens to reveal Jimmy. Hiller raises her eyebrow at Kittleson and gets up.) I'll be in my chambers. (She walks over to the door, stopping next to Jimmy before she goes out.) You don't ever want to be appearing before me, Counsel. (She leaves. Jimmy looks slightly deflated.)
Kittleson: Please...get out.
Jimmy: I never thought you really did this. I just had to recognize that-
Kittleson: You couldn't be certain I didn't?
Jimmy: (sighs) Look, some people react bigger to things when emotions are running higher. This was... a friend of mine. A dear friend, and you- you might be someone I've... fallen in love with... a little. So, just the very idea that you might not be the person I knew...it made me have this big... overreaction. (He sighs and shakes his head) I don't know how to say how sorry I really am.
Kittleson: Trust me. Whether you are able to convey your sorrow here is completely irrelevant. Please leave! Jimmy: I don't want it to be over between us...
Kittleson: It is. Whatever you believe, Jimmy, believe that. (Jimmy sighs and leaves. Kittleson looks a little sad.)

(Hospital. Bobby is standing next to Lindsay's bed.)

Lindsay: I'd still feel better if they found his prints on the knife. Bobby: It was him, Lindsay, you can relax... (He smiles at her.) You really okay?
Lindsay: Yeah, I think I'm just tired from all the visits... my parents, everyone from the office... (She rolls her eyes) Joey Heric... (Patrick, standing at the foot of her bed, laughs)
Patrick: I guess that's my cue to leave. (He smiles and rubs Lindsay's knee) Take care.
Lindsay: Thanks, Father. (Bobby smiles at him)
Bobby: Yeah. Thanks. (Helen walks up just as he's leaving. She smiles and nods at him.)
Helen: Father.
Patrick: Kiss my ass. (Bobby and Lindsay exchange looks of confusion)
Helen: Excuse me?
Patrick: I read in the paper your little quotes, what you said to the archdiesis. (Helen shakes her head)
Helen: Oh, Father, I was acting out, I thought a nun had... (His expression stays the same) Well, she's my best friend, my roommate! I- (he still doesn't relent) Look, I'm Catholic!
Patrick: With Catholics like you, who needs Protestants! (He leaves)
Helen: Oh, now there's a sound bite for tolerance.
Bobby: Helen...
Helen: (Yelling after Patrick) Maybe you can kiss my-
Bobby: Helen! (She turns to him, open-mouthed) Come on... (She relaxes and smiles at Lindsay)
Helen: How are you doing?
Lindsay: I'm fine...
Bobby: Listen, Helen, I've been waiting... all day to be alone with her...
Helen: What, are you asking me to leave? (Lindsay grins at this)
Bobby: Yes.
Helen: Well, I won't. (Bobby looks surprised)
Bobby: Helen...
Helen: Oh, come on! I've hardly had any time with her. And it's not like you could do anything... she's got tubes all over her.
Bobby: I want to talk to her!
Helen: Well then talk to her. There's nothing you can't say to her in front of me, after all we've been through--
Bobby: There are some things!
Helen: Well, I'm not leaving. Say what you gotta to say, make it quick, I'll cover my ears. (She puts her fingers in her ears and moves to the foot of the bed, facing the other way.)
Bobby: Um, ok... (Searches around for a chair, finds one, pulls it up and sits on it. He faces Lindsay, she looks back at him with a radiant, loving smile. He has a happy, relieved look on his face.) Marry me.
Helen: (Whips around, fingers in ears forgotten, shocked) What?!
Bobby: (annoyed) Do you mind?
Helen: (detached, still in shock) Sorry.
Lindsay: (Has shocked look on her face as well, but also a tiny smile) Marry you?
Bobby: The past two days... I've realized that I can't live without you. And I don't want to.
Lindsay: Well-- don't you think marriage isn't something you should decide in the heat of a crisis?
Bobby: If there's anything this crisis has taught me, it's that I want to grow old with you. I love you. I want to be your husband... and I want you to be my wife. (As he talks, Lindsay's smile gets bigger and bigger)
Lindsay: I-- I don't know what to say...
Helen: (heartfelt, puts her hand over her heart) Just say yes!
Bobby: Quiet!
Helen: (still lost in the moment) Sorry...
Bobby: (to Lindsay) Do you want some time to think about it?
Lindsay: (she nods, bites her lip, but is still smiling) Yeah, I-- I think I should...
Bobby: (smiles and pats her hand) Okay. (He is standing up when Lindsay's hand reaches up and grabs his lapel, keeping him near her. He stops and looks at her, startled)
Lindsay: I thought about it. (long pause, then she breaks into a huge smile) Yes.
Bobby: (grins madly) Really?
Lindsay: (big smile and nod) Really.
Helen: (overcome with emotion) Really?! Oh, god... (She starts laughing and crying and grabs Bobby and hugs the life out of him, they're both laughing. Lindsay, in the background, grabs for Bobby's sleeve)
Lindsay: Bobby-- Bobby.... that's not how it works-- (Bobby and Helen stop hugging and turn back to her, all smiles.)
Bobby: (to Helen) Please can you leave now?
Helen: Not a chance! (Tears in her eyes, so happy she can barely speak)
Lindsay: Just ignore her, Bobby.
Bobby: Oh, I forgot-- (he reaches into his coat pocket and brings out a small velvet box. Lindsay's face lights up and she gasps as he opens it)
Lindsay: Oh, Bobby...
Helen: It's so big! (Both Bobby and Lindsay look annoyed this time) Sorry... (Bobby takes the ring and puts it on Lindsay's finger. She looks at it, enraptured, then turns to him)
Lindsay: (smiling gently) I love you. (He looks at her like she's the most wonderful thing he's ever seen)
Bobby: (to Helen) One second, look away... (takes her shoulder and turns her around, pushing her away. She pays no attention and openly stares at them happily. He leans over Lindsay) I love you... (They kiss for a long time, while Helen looks on with tears in her eyes, but at the same time looking slightly sad. Bobby leans closer and takes Lindsay's shoulders, and they kiss even more deeply.)

(Night time. The camera slowly zooms down through the buildings of Boston, focusing on a lone nun walking through the streets. The camera gets closer and closer, and we see the nun stop at a crosswalk and turn towards us. She lifts her face, and we see that it's not a she after all, but none other than George Vogelman!)
